What I have always loved most about the games is that they cover three different facets of empire building (albeit simplified). The first of an excellent series of strategy games on the PC which has since covered the Medieval period, Rome (used on a BBC TV programme where contestants fought battles of the period), Empire building of the 18th century and finally the Napoleonic Wars. A few times we played Shogun Total War against each other. Heavy Cardboard on YouTube has a couple of play through a in the last two days that are great, and actually goes through a teaching process, if you’re looking to learn the game. While I was at university many moons ago (I started in the LAST CENTURY – man that makes me feel old), a friend set up a simple computer network in our student house, allowing us to play games against each other in those hours where we weren’t in lectures, or studying, or drinking, or partying, or sleeping, or watching TV, or out, or sitting around talking about stupid things. If you haven’t played this, please do yourself a favour and look it up, and see if it’s something you might enjoy. The campaign I played had a bit easier combat than I had hoped for, but after playing and looking forward in the rule book to other campaigns, I’m confident this is only a flaw for the initial campaign that’s recommended for a players first game.

I really felt like the generals in those stereotypical movie scenes, pushing fake units around on a map, planning for a war or battle. Never before have I played a game where I decided to give up ground in one are, losing control of a objective, because it would weaken the enemy to fight for it, and I would more easily dispatch them in the next round. I love the puzzle it provides, and the intricate strategies that can be used to solve it. I’ve been working throughout this whole COVID B.S., dealing with daily health regulation changes daily in the hospital, so I’ve been stressed, and only wanting to nap and watch YouTube on my days off, so the game didn’t get played for a couple of weeks.įinally convinced myself to play it last night, and after 4 hours of learning and playing through the first campaign, I have no other option but to say this may be the best solo experience I’ve ever had.

Couldn’t find a copy at retail, but luckily found someone selling a copy of Facebook. Got some recommendations for Field Commander Napoleon a few weeks back when looking for highly regarded solo war games.
